4 books on Delivery Robot [PDF]

Delivery robots are already used in many cities to deliver food from restaurants and stores. They encounter many obstacles along the way: from a harmless flowerbed that they can easily avoid, to excited children (and sometimes adults) who can be quite challenging to avoid.

In the books, you'll learn that there are five main components that make a robot intelligent and capable of delivering orders quickly and safely: 1. Sensors - help the robot see the world around it and understand its own movement. 2. Perception - transforms sensor data into a picture of the world that the robot can understand, highlighting important objects around it. 3. Maps - contain detailed information about the area the robot is moving through. 4. Localization - helps the robot pinpoint its location on the map at any given moment. 5. The robot's brain, which decides how to act in different situations and selects the best route.

The most interesting part - is the Brain. Every delivery robot's journey begins with two points on the map: a separate backend service informs the robot where to pick up the order and where to deliver it. Route planning should take into account map data, including road infrastructure and potential obstacles. Following the route is also challenging due to a variety of factors: uneven road surfaces, changing friction and incomplete sensor data. These errors can throw the robot off course, so the brain should continuously adjust its movement. According to the books, for this tasks are used PID controller - analogous to a gas pedal (for longitudinal control and Pure Pursuit - analogous to a steering wheel (for lateral control).
