OpenAI ($189B)

Anthropic and OpenAI are both American startups focused on creating large language models using the Transformer architecture. On the base of these models, they develop chatbots for interacting with users and sell API access to their models. Both companies conduct research in Artificial General Intelligence and promote the safe and ethical use of AI.

But OpenAI (2015) was the first company to bring LLM to the mass market and is now the market leader. Their flagship product, ChatGPT is the most popular chatbot for generating text, code and images. It features various auxiliary functions, including a canvas, file uploads, projects, agent mode and web search. In addition to ChatGPT, the company is developing DALL·E (graphics generating model), Sora (video model) and Point-E (3D model). The company has received major investment from Microsoft and integrated its models into Microsoft products.

Anthropic (founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees) is often positioned as a more "cautious" alternative to OpenAI. Their main product - Claude intends to be more interpretable and safe. This language model is trained using a proprietary method called Constitutional AI, which involves embedding a "constitution"- a set of principles or rules that define how it should behave. Anthropic is partially funded by Google and other investors.
