OpenAI ($189B)
OpenAI
xAI ($42.4B)
xAI
OpenAI and xAI are both American startups that create generative AI models and strive to intend general artificial intelligence. Their Large Language Models utilize a transformer architecture and reinforcement learning with human feedback to improve response quality. They both bet on multimodality AI, combining text, images, sound, video, 3D. Both companies provide commercial products, including chatbots and APIs and rarely give away open-source models. Much of their infrastructure runs on third-party cloud platforms and large data centers.

OpenAI (launched in December 2015) was originally a non-profit organization created to develop "safe and useful" AGI but has since become a commercial entity. However, compared to xAI, it places greater emphasis on safety, AI ethics, anti-fakery, dangerous topic restrictions and content moderation. OpenAI publicly releases research-papers on its systems. OpenAI's main commercial partner, Microsoft, provides infrastructure, investment and cloud capacity. The company's core product is the ChatGPT language model, but it also develops DALL-E image generator and Sora video generator.

xAI (2023) is a startup by Elon Musk. Its main product - Grok chatbot, runs on the X/Twitter social network. It was initially designed to use reasoning and real-time search to expand context (rather than initial weight learning) and has fewer restrictions on sensitive topics than ChatGPT. To handle real-time web-sourced context, xAI uses more computing resources including super-computers. It also has a built-in Aurora image generation tool.
