Runway
Pika and Runway are both services for generating videos from text prompts. They use diffusion neural networks and transformers to synthesize frames and maintain motion coherence. Both are available as online services and don't require video editing software installation. Both allow limited control over camera movement, styles, objects and visual effects in the generated videos.

But Pika (founded in 2023) focuses on creating short AR videos with unrealistic effects over regular video footage (similar to what Snapchat does with video chat). These effects, called "Pikaffects," include melts, explosions, live objects, transforming a person into a character or appearance of animated characters. To create an effect, user can select one of the preset effects or enter a text prompt. These videos are primarily designed to collect likes on social networks like Instagram and TikTok. The service operates via a Discord bot.

Runway (2018) is primarily designed for generating realistic, high-quality videos. It is used by professional filmmakers, artists, YouTube content creators and marketers. It is highly effective at maintaining character and object consistency between shots. It also offers built-in editing tools for generated videos: removing, adding and transforming objects, changing styles and lighting within the frame. In addition to text prompts, it can generate videos from uploaded image or video sample.
