6 books on AI for Construction [PDF]

From automatically generating construction schedules to robotic masons with millimeter-precision laying, ML technologies are already transforming the construction industry.
If you follow the development of construction technologies, you've likely noticed how the familiar landscape of the industry has changed in recent years. Leading developers around the world have already transformed their sites into true digital factories, where massive amounts of data operate alongside traditional concrete and rebar. BIM models store data on every structural element, sensors continuously monitor the condition of equipment and cameras record all on-site processes. The explosive growth of data has made the real-world application of machine learning in construction possible.
The ML technology stack in the industry has evolved around several key areas. For example, computer vision analyzes visual data from construction sites, predictive analytics anticipates risks and delays while generative models optimize design solutions. Moreover, all ML systems tightly integrate with traditional construction software: from BIM platforms to mobile apps for foremen.
However, implementing ML in construction is more than just installing new software. Each construction project is unique, with data coming from various sources in different formats and processing it requires significant computing power. ML in construction works only when three key elements combine: specific problem, high-quality data and a team willingn to change. When these conditions are met, machine learning technologies not only pay for themselves but also provide the efficiency boost that modern construction lacks.
Here are some PDF books about using AI in construction:
1. Building Tomorrow: Unleashing the Potential of Artificial Intelligence in Construction
2025 by Fulvio Re Cecconi, Ania Khodabakhshian, Luca Rampini

What I liked most in this book is the chapter on using computer vision and digital twins of buildings. The idea is that a digital 3D model of a building under construction is created (and gradually updated as the building is being built). This is necessary for training the computer vision model. Web cameras are placed on the 3D model - in the same places where real web cameras are located on the site. And a large number of "synthetic" images are generated for them to learn. The trick is that these "synthetic" images are already annotated (objects are automatically labeled in them: a door, a ladder, a person, a bucket...). And CV model trained on synthetic photographs can detect objects in a real video stream. And if you integrate it with the (universal) LLM model (owned by the construction company), which can generate text descriptions of images, you can automate the compilation of reports and triggering of security alerts.
