5 books on Artificial General Intelligence [PDF]

October 04, 2025

These books are about the theoretical foundations of creating a general artificial intelligence comparable to the human mind. They also usually talk about forecasts for the development of AGI, its impact on society, the economy and the future of humanity.

1. Artificial Intelligence: Humans at the Heart of Algorithms
2025 by Alan Dix

This book aims to explain all the main AI technologies, as well as all the technologies that, in the author's opinion, relate to AI: from expert systems to modern AI agents. But after all this baggage of knowledge, something interesting appears, which justifies the title of the book. The author considers the Internet (Web) as a structure of knowledge updated by humanity and the use of it by AI models as a data structure. In addition, the author explores the possibilities of combining the capabilities of human and artificial intelligence through the automation of certain tasks, intelligent interfaces (chatbots) and some human-oriented AI. There is also an attempt to systematize knowledge on how to explain / predict the results of LLM models based on machine learning. And as many as 10 pages are devoted to the structure of the human brain, an explanation of what rational thinking, intuition and emotions are.

2. Artificial General Intelligence: Machines may eventually be as clever as humans, and possibly even smarter, but the game is still far from over
2022 by Fouad Sabry

From this book, I found out that the development of Symbolic AI plays a key role in understanding how machines can replicate human-like reasoning. For example, Hugo de Garis's "artificial brains" that have principally new cognitive architecture. Maybe his ideas will allow us to reach the singularity - the point when machine intelligence outpace human. But not so fast! The history of AI shows us that from time to time "AI winters" occur.

3. Artificial General Intelligence
2015 by Jordi Bieger, Ben Goertzel, Alexey Potapov

This is a list of selected papers/reports from the AGI 2015 conference that provide diverse perspectives on the future challenges and opportunities in AGI research. In short, the conclusions are following: First of all, broad definition of intelligence is crucial for advancing AGI, as it moves beyond traditional narrow task-specific AI frameworks. In any case, AGI research needs interdisciplinary collaboration to achieve the goal. Also these proceedings from the conference highlight the importance of adaptability in artificial intelligence systems.

4. Theoretical Foundations of Artificial General Intelligence
2012 by Pei Wang, Ben Goertzel

The authors of this book think that theoretical problems in AGI are in understanding cognitive processes and how they can be replicated in machines, but practical AGI development requires bridging these theoretical concepts with real-world applications. So they collected contributions from active AGI researchers that provide information about practical challenges and potential solutions in the field. Their simple presentation of complex AGI theories makes the content accessible to those who has no specialized knowledge.

5. Advances in Artificial General Intelligence: Concepts, Architectures and Algorithms
2007 by Ben Goertzel, Pei Wang

Developing software with human-like general intelligence requires a multi-discipline approach and this AGIRI workshop showcases collaborative work on the new scientific methodologies and specific algorithms that may play a critical role in enabling machines to perform tasks requiring general intelligence. The AGI research is continuously evolving, with new concepts emerging that challenge traditional AI paradigms.
