The main question currently troubling designers is whether AI will take over their work. After all, generative AI models can draw any image in seconds for free from a text description and designers fear that businesses will no longer need their services. Of course, business strives to minimize costs, but designers must remember that their work isn't limited to visualization alone - it includes functions that neural networks can't yet handle.
Although AI raises the minimum bar for design quality, it doesn't reach a high enough level. Automatic HTML/CSS generators have been around for 20 years, but people still do layout by hand because it produces better quality. Currently, AI primarily assists designers with specific assets: text, graphics, overall styles, but the designers must combine these componente on higher-level themselves. The quality of ideas will become the key factor in good design. Designers will act as conductors of AI tools, similar to art directors, issuing the necessary commands and guiding visualizations in the desired direction.
Computer will not replace designer, but rather become their co-author. Designer remains responsible for the final result, ensuring its alignment with the project's goals and objectives and its aesthetic and functional value. Designer will also remain responsible for communicating with clients and users, understanding their needs and desires and creating an emotional connection with them through design.
The interface of design programs probably will be simplified. Instead of complex and overloaded toolbars, we will mostly communicate with AI in natural language. AI will be personalized to the tastes and views of each designer to create their recognizable style. So the designer will have a virtual partner who will understand their preferences, strengths and weaknesses, their way of thinking and creating. Designer and AI will work in close synergy, complementing and inspiring each other.
